Box Office: "Paranormal Activity 4" Scares Off the Competition

Scaring up solid numbers for its big debut, "Paranormal Activity 4" emerged atop the pack to kick off the box office weekend of October 19-21, 2012.

The latest installment from the Paramount Pictures horror franchise raked in $15.0 million on Friday with an expected debut weekend total of $34.0 million being enough to top all other theatrical competitors.

Looking to be in line for a second straight runner-up finish, the Ben Affleck starring/directed thriller "Argo" - which is about Tony Mendez's account of the rescue of six U.S. diplomats during the 1979 Iran hostage crisis - notched expected sales of $5.5 million on Friday with a $19.0 million projected sophomore weekend.

Filling out the top five at the box office in earmarked earnings are the just-released Tyler Perry fronted homicide detective caper "Alex Cross" ($13.0 million) in third, followed by the Olivier Megaton directed crime drama "Taken 2" ($13.5 million) in fourth and Adam Sandler and Selena Gomez's animated family comedy "Hotel Transylvania" ($13.3 million) in fifth.
