Being a working parent is tough for anyone, but for Halle Berry, a movie role might have been the last straw that led to her increasingly ugly custody battle with her ex, Canadian model Gabriel Aubry.
According to People, Aubry, 35, and the ex-couple's 2-year-old daughter Nahla were supposed to accompany Berry, 44, to New York City for two weeks while she filmed the ensemble romantic comedy New Year's Eve (a sequel of sorts to 2010's Valentine's Day). But when Aubry decided not to go with Berry to New York, the actress abruptly pulled out of the film, and has since been replaced by Katherine Heigl.
While Berry does have a nanny, sources tell People that the Oscar-winning actress bailed on the movie because she was concerned about leaving Nahla in Los Angeles with her father while she was across the country filming. "When Gabriel refused to go, that became a factor in her decision to pull out of the film because she didn't feel right leaving Nahla," the source says. "No job is that important to Halle. Nahla comes first."
On Monday, Berry's rep told People that Halle had "serious concerns for her daughter's well-being while in the care of her father for any extended period of time and is prepared to take all necessary steps to protect her." The actress sought "swift judicial intervention" and allegedly dropped out of the film so she could focus on the custody battle.
Aubry's reps fired back the following day, saying the model was "disappointed in Halle's decision to falsely malign him publicly and for her own purposes" and that "he refuses to be pulled into her dispute over a canceled film production."
Yikes. For such a feel-good film, New Year's Eve sure is causing a lot of drama. Think there's any chance Aubry and Berry can reconcile and have a real life version of a rom-com happy ending? We're not holding our breath.
