A big part of the MTV Movie Awards is the stage, and every year the creative folks responsible for coming up with the look of the show manage to think up some eye-popping way to keep viewers entertained.
Although the stage design has often been sleek and modern, for the 2011 Movie Awards, the team went in a different direction, filling the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, California, with fantastical props like caves, butterflies, LED lights and glittery, hanging jewels.
Executive Producer Mark Burnett spoke to MTV News about the inspiration for the design, and he described it as "a little bit of a 'Lord of the Rings,' our nod to that part of the movie industry. ... And our production designer LeRoy [Bennett], [this is] his nod to fantasy in the movies."
With "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse" and "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1" leading the nominee pack, Burnett said the feel of this show also reflects those fantastical worlds that are ruled by wizards, werewolves and vampires. "I think there's been a lot of movies in the last few years that are very fantasy-driven," he said, adding that Tim Burton had been a major inspiration for the stage design.
And come Sunday, that stage will be filled with A-listers like Generation Award honoree Reese Witherspoon, Kristen Stewart, Emma Stone and, of course, host Jason Sudeikis.
If fantasy isn't your thing, Burnett offered an alternative way to interpret the swirling, eye-catching look of the show. He joked, "It could be 4 a.m., you've had too much to drink [and] it's the end of the party."
