Hot on the heels of speculation that Charlie Sheen and ex-wife Brooke Mueller might be getting back together (again!), TMZ is reporting that Mueller, 33, is headed to Mexico for a rehab treatment that's illegal in the United States.
The treatment facility is in Cancun, and the rehab consists of patients ingesting a drug called Ibogaine, which certain studies say can help break addictions to cocaine, alcohol, heroin and other drugs. Ibogaine, a hallucinogen extracted from the iboga plant, is not legal in the U.S.
According to TMZ's sources, Mueller -- who just completed a stint in outpatient rehab in the hopes that her children would not be taken away from her -- says that the Mexican rehab will be "extreme"... but she has hopes that it will "rewire" her brain.
Mueller is reportedly addicted to methamphetamines, a particularly tough addiction to break, and she has been through various rehabilitation programs over the years -- to no avail. Her latest plan to go to Mexico shows a desperation that many find worrisome. While some addiction experts do believe that Ibogaine can help with rewiring addicts' brains, Celebrity Rehab host Dr. Drew Pinsky says he's "very concerned" that Mueller is taking this course of action.
"In my experience people, after Ibogaine, stop opiates for three to six months and then they begin again," Pinsky tells RadarOnline. "I have had this experience with dozens of patients, but most disturbingly these patients had persistent mood and personality changes."
Mueller was involved in altercation with a flight attendant while en route to Cancun last Thursday, and was removed from the plane and hospitalized. Though TMZ says Mueller plans to head to Cancun when she's released from the hospital, it's not a big revelations that she cannot afford any more "mood and personality changes."
A source close to Mueller tells Radar that Mueller is getting desperate. "(Brooke) feels completely powerless to her addiction," says the source. "Brooke feels that going to get treatment is Mexico is her only option. Brooke wants to be sober, but her addiction just too strong right now."
Apparently, Mueller has been advised that the best way to treat such a tough addiction is to commit to a year-long intense program, which would involve living at a rehab facility. But, the source close to Mueller says that she can't bear the thought of leaving her children for any amount of time. "Brooke is also afraid that if she does go away to rehab, Charlie will stop paying child support to her for the boys," claims the source. "Brooke needs that money, it's her only source of income."
It sounds as though Dr. Drew is right to be very concerned.
