People's Choice Awards Lead the Award Show Parade

People's Choice Awards Lead the Award Show Parade

Five days into the new year, and the awards show season is already upon us! First up is a fun one: The People's Choice Awards (CBS, Wednesday at 9 p.m. ET). The lovable Queen Latifah, who shockingly has never won one of these herself, will return as host for a second year in a row.

When picking the People's Choice nominees in movies, TV and music, we the people tend to choose differently than the industry types who judge the other big awards shows (i.e. Oscars, Emmys, and Grammys). Sure, Glee is one of the most-nominated shows here, and it will probably be an Emmy favorite, too. But it's tough to imagine Jersey Shore or even Burn Notice earning Emmy attention, while both shows appeared on People's Choice ballots (in the categories of Favorite Guilty Pleasure and Favorite TV Obsession, respectively).

As for movies, ask us real people to choose between, say, Clint Eastwood's Hereafter or The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, and the sexy vampire romp is our no-brainer choice. (The Clint pic, a strong Oscar contender, didn't even make it onto the Favorite Movie ballot.) And while Eclipse star Kristen Stewart probably won't be collecting a little gold man this year, odds are she'll scoop up this show's crystal teardrop -- if not for Favorite Movie Actress, then at least for being part of the Favorite Onscreen Team. The big celebrity question of the night is whether Stewart and beau Robert Pattinson will pose together on the red carpet.

When it comes to music, we the people tend to agree with industry insiders about who's doing it best -- for the most part. Fans gave critically beloved acts like Lady Gaga and Eminem four nominations each. But voters also tipped their hats to teen sensation Selena Gomez and her band, The Scene, handing her a People's Choice nod for Favorite Breakout Artist. (Gomez, who is also performing at the awards ceremony, is pitted against her rumored boyfriend Justin Bieber in the category.) It's hard to imagine Gomez getting equal shrift from the Grammy committee later this year.

People's Choice winners always say that this award is extra-special, because it comes straight from the fans at home. Amen to that! Aren't we the ones they're working so hard to entertain? Click here for a complete list of the 2011 nominees.
