The news took us all by surprise and the battles are still raging, as Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise deal with their surprise divorce announcement.
As recently reported by TMZ, the brunette beauty may have created a tax problem for her former hubby by filing for divorce in New York City.
The 33-year-old submitted the papers in the Big Apple because she wants sole legal custody of their daughter, Suri Cruise, and New York courts are more likely to grant this to Holmes compared to California courts.
According to TMZ, ?Tom has been trying to do everything legally within his power to avoid strong ties to New York City because the tax rates are ridiculously high ... and he does not want any appearance that he or Katie have been living there.?
Tom and Katie deeded their NYC apartment last August - though Katie and Suri just moved out over the past weekend, according to People magazine insiders.
