NBC has released the first promo for ‘The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon’ online and on television. The current ‘Late Night’ host takes over as host of the long-running program on February 17th. The new commercial not only introduces the 39-year-old comedian who has hosted ‘Late Night with Jimmy Fallon’ for the last several years, but also features archival footage documenting the 60-year-history of the iconic TV program which dates back to 1954 and its creator and first host, Steve Allen. All of the hosts are featured in the clip –Jack Paar in the late 1950s to early 1960s; Johnny Carson who was the longest running host, from 1962 to 1992; Conan O’Brien, who had the shortest run as host as well as an unfortunate and poorly handled exit by the network which won him much sympathy. Conversely, the returning and current host, Jay Leno, found some disdain and plenty of mockery, notably from another late-night host, Jimmy Kimmel in his “Late Night TV Wars” spoof in the style of Ken Burns’ Civil War documentary.
