Roseanne Barr's New Sitcom: Will You Watch?

Roseanne Barr's New Sitcom: Will You Watch?

Years before the Real Housewives existed, there was only one housewife on TV who could always get people talking: Roseanne Barr. As Roseanne Connor -- a back-talking, blue collar, working mother of three -- Barr created a beloved character the likes of which had never before been seen on primetime television. Now, more than 20 years after Roseanne debuted, Entertainment Weekly confirms that Barr has a new sitcom in the works. Is the world ready for Roseanne's comeback?

The 58-year-old comedian will write and star in the new show, which will be produced by her longtime boyfriend Johnny Argent. Called Downwardly Mobile, the comedy will reportedly be about a working-class family trying to make it day to day -- a similar concept to Roseanne, which ran with great success from 1988 to 1997.

The big difference, as we see it, is that Roseanne was based on the actress' actual life at the time -- whereas Barr now runs a macadamia nut farm in Hawaii. (Those who have seen her reality show, Roseanne's Nuts, are familiar with her new profession.) It's been 14years since Roseanne went off the air; now that she's a rich recluse, can she still create a blue-collar show with the same sharp bite?

We're not sure, but we're excited to see her try. In these times of economic downturn, we have plenty of excess on TV -- from Keeping Up with the Kardashians to Gossip Girl -- and very few shows that mirror the reality of most of our lives. If Roseanne can make us laugh at our recession-era lives, then we'll gladly invite her back into our homes!
